Bulldogs plate 33 runs in season-opening doubleheader sweep over Saint Augustine’s

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened the 2014 season by piling up 29 hits and 33 runs Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader over Saint Augustine's University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won by scores of 13-4 and 20-7 to improve to 2-0 overall. The Falcons fall to 0-2 on the season.

Game One: Wingate 13, Saint Augustine's 4

Junior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) went four-for-five with a homer, four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) added a double, three RBI and two runs scored, while senior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) was two-for-four with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman infielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) went two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored, while junior outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) added two doubles and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Calvin Butcher went two-for-three with a homer and three RBI to lead the SAU attack. Jason Baytop was three-for-three with a run scored, while Jordan Wright wet one-for-three with an RBI and a run scored for the Falcons.

A sacrifice fly from Krebs plated Serra in the first to give Wingate an early lead. Saint Augustine's answered with four in the second, highlighted by Butcher's three-run homer.

The Bulldogs responded with three runs in the second to tie it. Billings had a two-run single in the frame, while Serra drove home the game-tying run.

That would be all of the scoring until the seventh, when the 'Dogs plated four runs to take an 8-4 lead. Serra put Wingate on top with an RBI triple, while junior infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) added an RBI single. Clark followed with an RBI single, while a sacrifice fly from junior first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) put Wingate on top by four.

The Bulldogs plated five more runs in the eighth to go on top 13-4. Krebs started the scoring with a two-run double, while Clark's three run homer over the scoreboard in left put the 'Dogs on top by nine.

Senior right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) got the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. The preseason All-SAC selection allowed four runs on eight hits in seven innings, striking out six. Senior right-hander Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) worked the final two innings to notch the save, allowing just one hit. Bryan Rivera took the loss, allowing six runs on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.

Game Two: Wingate 20, Saint Augustine's 7

Junior catcher Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) went four-for-four with a double, triple, six RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Billings was three-for-five with two RBI and three runs scored, while Krebs went two-for-two with two RBI and three runs scored. Spitz added two RBI and two runs scored, while Clark had a double, three RBI and three runs scored.

Jamie Scott and Carey Cheek drove in two runs each for the Falcons. Sterling James had an RBI and a run scored for Saint Augustine's.

An RBI single from Cheek gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the first. The 'Dogs answered with four in the bottom of the frame, scoring the first two runs on wild pitches. An RBI single from Simmons made it 4-1.

The Falcons responded with four runs in the second to regain the lead. Scott drove in two runs with a single, while Cheek's sacrifice fly put SAU on top 5-4.

Wingate had the emphatic answer in the third, plating nine runs. Simmons and Billings started the scoring with RBI singles, while Spitz added a two-run single. A wild pitch plated a run, followed by an RBI single from Krebs. Clark added at two-run double, while an RBI triple from Simmons capped the scoring in the frame, making it 13-5.

Two errors, a hit batsman and a sac fly from Simmons plated four more runs for the 'Dogs in the fourth to make it 17-5. Krebs pushed the lead to 13 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Falcons scored two in the sixth to make it 18-7.

Wingate scored two more runs in the sixth to make the final margin 20-7. Simmons plated the first run with an RBI double down the right field line, then scored on an RBI single from Billings to give the 'Dogs a 13-run lead.

Freshman right-hander Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win in relief, improving to 1-0. He allowed a run on four hits in three innings of work, striking out four. Jeremy Sandifer took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed 11 runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking five.

The two teams meet again Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.
