#50 Bulldogs edge #40 Georgia Regents Augusta 5-4

Wingate earns second top 40 victory in as many days

Wingate, N.C.----The number 50 Wingate University Bulldogs picked up their second victory over a top 40 opponent in as many days Monday afternoon, defeating the 40th-ranked Jaguars of Georgia Regents University Augusta 5-4 in NCAA Division II women's tennis action. Wingate improves to 4-2 overall, while GRU Augusta falls to 3-1.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles action. Senior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) and junior Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) won 8-2 at number one doubles, while junior Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) and freshman Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) won 8-5 at number two doubles.

Evers notched a 6-2, 6-4 win over GRU Augusta junior Aida Castany (Barcelona, Spain) at number one singles to put Wingate on top 3-1, while a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 win for Tanik over GRU Augusta sophomore Maria Cecilia Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador) at number four singles put the 'Dogs on top 4-2.
 
Williams won the clincher for the second consecutive day. After dropping the opening set 4-6, she rallied for a 6-4, 6-0 victory over GRU Augusta sophomore Maria Nadal (Barcelona, Spain) to give Wingate the 5-4 victory.

Wingate opens South Atlantic Conference play Monday, Feb. 24, hosting Newberry at 2 p.m. GRU Augusta's next match is also against Newberry; the Jaguars entertain the Wolves Thursday at 2 p.m.
