Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) tossed a complete game three-hit shutout to lead the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory in game two of a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Tornados won the first game 6-5 in 10 innings. The Bulldogs move to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the SAC, while the Tornados move to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

Game One: Brevard 6, Wingate 5 (10 innings)

Junior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was two-for-four with a double and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) two-for-six with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Junior outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was two-for-three in game one.

Kody Spencer was two-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored. Eric Renegar added two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Hunter Donaldson and Alex McGee both went two-for-four for the Tornados.

Renegar's RBI single in the third gave Brevard an early 1-0 lead. Wingate answered with a run in the sixth, tying it at one on an RBI double from Clark.

Spencer led off the seventh with a homer to put the Tornados on top 2-1. Wingate answered in the eighth, when Serra led off the frame with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice, stole third, then scored on a wild pitch to tie it at two.

Brevard scored three times in the eighth to take a 5-2 lead. The Tornados took advantage of three Wingate errors, while Donaldson added an RBI single to put Brevard on top by three.

The Bulldogs answered with three in the ninth to tie it. Serra plated the first run with an RBI double, while a passed ball scored another run to make it 5-4. Clark delivered the game-tying RBI single with two outs, making it 5-5.

Brevard again took advantage of Wingate miscues in the 10th to win it. Renegar led off the frame with a single, then went to second on an error on the throw. He scored from second on the next play via a Wingate throwing error, the fifth error of the game for the Bulldogs.

Carson Anderson got the win in relief, tossing one inning without allowing a hit, walking one. Junior right-hander Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-1. He allowed an unearned run on one hit in one inning of work.

Game Two: Wingate 1, Brevard 0

Sophomore outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) was two-for-three with an RBI, while freshman infielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) went two-for-three with a run scored. Junior first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) also had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Billings started the game with a walk, then stole second. He scored on an RBI single from Krebs to make it 1-0.

That would be all Currie would need. The preseason All-SAC selection struck out 10 on the day, allowing just three singles. He retired nine straight at one point, until a one-out single in the seventh. He ended the game with a strikeout and groundout to move to 3-0 on the year. JD Chaplain took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed one run on four hits in five innings, striking out two and walking two.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Francis Marion Wednesday at 3 p.m.
