#50 Bulldogs win 5-4 over Newberry in SAC opener as Cabana notches 100th career win

Wingate, N.C.----In a battle of the only two SAC teams that are ranked in the ITA Southeast regional poll, the 50th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs prevailed 5-4 over visiting Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action Monday afternoon. Wingate, ranked sixth in the region, improves to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Wolves, ranked 10th in the region, fall to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The victory gives head coach Michael Cabana his 100th women's tennis victory at Wingate.

Newberry won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading to singles play. Senior Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) teamed with sophomore Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) for an 8-2 win in number three doubles action.

Freshman Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) won 6-2, 6-0 at number four singles to tie the match at two, while a 6-0, 6-4 win at number one singles from senior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) put Wingate on top 3-2. A 6-2, 6-4 win from junior Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) at number three singles gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 advantage. Winston won the clincher 6-1, 6-2 at number five singles.

The Bulldogs return to action Thursday, hosting Queens at 1 p.m.
