#29 Wingate wins five of six singles matches in 6-3 victory over Queens

Wingate, N.C.----The 29th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs won five of six singles matches Thursday afternoon, overcoming a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to register a 6-3 victory over visiting Queens University in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. The Bulldogs improve to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Wingate has won six straight, and is undefeated against Division II opponents this season. Queens falls to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

The Royals took two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 advantage. Wingate's lone doubles victory came at number three doubles, with senior Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and sophomore Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) teaming for and 8-5 victory.

Freshman Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) won 6-3, 6-0 at number four singles to tie the match at two, while a 6-2, 6-0 win from junior Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) put Wingate on top 3-2. Winston put the 'Dogs on top 4-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at number five singles, while junior Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) won 6-1, 6-1 at number six singles to clinch the victory. Senior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) rallied to win her match at number one singles. The reigning SAC Player of the Week lost the opening set 6-4, but won the second set 6-4, then took the third set 7-6 via a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.

Wingate returns to action Saturday, hosting Coker at 1 p.m.
