Bulldogs take two from Flying Fleet to move to 4-0 overall

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs swept a doubleheader over visiting Erskine College Thursday afternoon in NCAA Division II softball action. Wingate won the first game 2-0, while erasing a 5-0 deficit in game two for a dramatic 8-7 walk-off win. The Bulldogs improve to 4-0 overall, while the Flying Fleet fall to 0-2 on the season.

Game One: Wingate 2, Erskine 0

Sophomore right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) tossed a complete game shutout, while sophomore outfielder Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) drove in a pair of runs to lead the Wingate offense. Freshman first baseman Amy Wingfield (Mechanicsville, Va.) went three-for-three with a double and a run scored for the Bulldogs, while senior designated player Kayla Saliga (Asheboro, N.C.) also had a double and a run scored.

Wingate got on the board in the second, when Saliga ripped a one-out double to left center. She moved to third on Wingfield's single to right center, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Adams.

The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fourth, getting a one-out double to right center from Wingfield. She scored on an RBI double from Adams to make it 2-0.

That would be plenty for Houser, who moved to 2-0 on the season. She allowed just three hits (all singles) in seven innings of work, striking out three and walking four. The 2013 second team All-SAC selection has tossed 12 shutout innings this season, allowing only three hits. Danica Newton took the loss, falling to 0-1. She allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings of work, striking out three.

Game Two: Wingate 8, Erskine 7

Saliga was three-for-four with a double, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Wingfield also drove in a pair of runs, while sophomore catcher Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) had a homer and three runs scored.

Kaitlyn Kerley was two-for-four with a homer and three RBI to lead the Erskine attack. Taylor Fernandes was two-for-three with a homer, while Lydia Trexler also homered for the Flying Fleet.

Erskine jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first, highlighted by Kerley's three-run homer to left center.

Wingate answered with four in the second to cut the lead to one. Sophomore outfielder Jordan Wilson (Gastonia, N.C.) started the scoring with an RBI single, while Saliga followed with a two-run double to center. She would score on Wingfield's RBI single to make it 5-4.

The Bulldogs tied it in the third when Laskey connected on her first homer of the year, a solo shot to center.

Erskine had the answer, regaining the lead in the fourth when Trexler homered to left. Wingate tied it in the fifth, getting a leadoff single from freshman outfielder Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.). She moved to second on a sacrifice and would score when Saliga reached on an error, making it 6-6.

The Bulldogs took their first lead in the sixth when Adams started the frame by reaching on an error. She would move to third on another Erskine error, then score on a sacrifice fly from Smith to make it 7-6.

The Flying Fleet tied the game in dramatic fashion, with Fernandes connecting on a solo homer with two outs in the top of the seventh, making it 7-7.

Laskey drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, then moved to second on Wilson's bunt. She moved to third on Saliga's single, then scored just ahead of the throw home on Wingfield's game-winning RBI fielder's choice.

Junior right-hander Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the win, improving to 1-0. She allowed two runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking two. Katherine Mulzer took the loss, falling to 0-1. She allowed the run in the seventh, allowing a hit while not recording an out. Candace Fitch allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits in six innings of work, striking out one.

Wingate travels to Columbus, Ga. this weekend for the Columbus State Tournament. The Bulldogs will face Pfeiffer and Columbus State Saturday, then take on King and Belmont Abbey on Sunday.
