Wingate, N.C.----With the Bulldogs trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two, senior outfielder
Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) connected on the game-winning walk-off three run homer to give the Bulldogs a dramatic 6-5 victory over Coker in game two of a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Coker won game one of the doubleheader 3-1 as Wingate took two out of three in the weekend series against the defending NCAA southeast regional champions. The Bulldogs move to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while Coker moves to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Game One: Coker 3, Wingate 1
Coker right-hander
Matthew Prosser tossed a complete game five-hitter to lead the Cobras to a 3-1 win in game one.
Dustin Russell was one-for-three with an RBI to lead the offense, while
Shea Bell and
Jarren Donato each had an RBI for the Cobras.
Sophomore outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) was one-for-four with an RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Junior outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was one-for-four with a run scored for the Bulldogs.
Coker got on the board in the third, getting a leadoff double from
Evan Rybicki. He went to third on a bunt single, then scored on an RBI single from Bell.
Wingate had the answer, scoring in the bottom of the frame to tie it. Spitz started the rally with a two-out single, then went to second on Serra's single. An RBI single from Krebs tied the game at one.
That would be all of the scoring until the eighth, when Coker scored twice to take the lead. The Cobras loaded the bases with a walk and two singles, while an RBI infield single from Russell put Coker on top 2-1. Donato followed with an RBI groundout to give the visitors a two-run lead.
That would be enough for Prosser, who moved to 2-0 on the season. He allowed a run on five hits in nine innings of work, striking out five and walking one, throwing 106 pitches. Senior right-hander
Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of work, striking out four. Sophomore left-hander
TJ Rinoski (Yorktown, Va.) allowed just one run on three hits in seven innings of work, striking out five.
Game Two: Wingate 6, Coker 5
Serra was two-for-four with a triple, homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was two-for-three with two runs scored.
TJ Giczkowski and
Chase Spivey each had two hits, an RBI and run scored to lead the Coker attack.
Ernie Kirkwood was three-for-four with a run scored, while Donato was two-for-three with an RBI.
An RBI single in the first gave Coker a 1-0 lead. Wingate tied it in the fourth when Serra tripled, then scored on an error.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the fifth, getting two singles and a walk to load the bases. Serra's grounder was bobbled at first, allowing two runs to score to put Wingate on top 3-1.
Coker answered with four in the sixth to regain the lead. Giczkowski plated the first run with an RBI single, while an RBI single from Russell, along with a Wingate error on the play put Coker back on top. Donato followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3.
That would be the score in the bottom of the seventh. Junior infielder
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) reached on an error to start the inning, then went to second on a single from Billings. They both moved up on a sacrifice from Spitz, bringing Serra to the plate with one out. Serra drove the 1-0 pitch over the fence in right to give Wingate the dramatic win.
Freshman right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed just one hit in 1 1/3 innings, striking out two.
Ben Brown took the loss, falling to 1-1. He allowed six runs (two earned) on five hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out three.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, hosting Limestone at 3 p.m.
