Spartanburg, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened day two of the Mid-South Classic with a 6-0 victory over 11th-ranked North Georgia. Wingate dropped its second game of the day 14-3 against UNC Pembroke. The Bulldogs are now 13-5 overall.

Sophomore right-hander
Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Bulldogs to their second victory over a ranked team this season. Senior designated player
Kayla Saliga (Asheboro, N.C.) had a homer and three RBI to lead the offense, while junior shortstop
Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) added a pair of RBI.
Wingate got things started in the first, when freshman outfielder
Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) drew a one-out walk, went to second on a single from senior outfielder
Hayley Whitley (Monroe, N.C.), then scored on an RBI single from Burrell.
The Bulldogs added four more runs in the third. Sophomore outfielder
Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) led off the frame with a double, then scored on an RBI single from Whitley. Burrell followed with an RBI double, while Saliga's two-run homer made it 5-0.
Burrell ripped a one-out double in the fifth, then scored on an RBI single from Saliga to make the final margin 6-0.
Houser got the win, moving to 8-1 on the year. She struck out two while allowing just three singles on the day.
UNC Pembroke 14, Wingate 3 (6 innings)
The Braves plated three runs in the first, one in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.
Burrell got the Bulldogs on the board in the bottom of the fourth, connecting on a two-run homer.
UNCP answered with five more in the sixth to take a 14-2 lead. Sophomore infielder
Emily Usiak (Matthews, N.C.) doubled in the bottom of the frame, then scored on an RBI single from Helms to make the final score 14-3.
Freshman left-hander
Taylor Bates (Peachland, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-4 on the year.
Wingate has two more games Sunday on the final day of the Mid-South Classic. The Bulldogs face Lander at 12 p.m., then take on sixth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic at 4 p.m.Â
