Bulldogs pick up 8-2 win at Mars Hill to move to 11-4 in SAC play

Mars Hill, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing streak Friday afternoon, registering an 8-2 victory at Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Bulldogs improve to 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 9-16 overall and 8-8 in the conference.

Junior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was three-for-four with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman infielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) went two-for-five with an RBI and a run scored, while junior infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) had a double and two RBI. Junior shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) added two hits and a run scored for the Bulldogs, while senior designated hitter Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.) had an RBI and a run scored.

Adam Daniel and Evan Rogers each had two hits and an RBI to lead the Mars Hill attack. Dalton Eisenbath added a pair of hits and a run scored for the Lions.

Wingate got on the board in the first when junior outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) drew a two-out walk, stole second, then scored on Clark's RBI single.

Mars Hill tied it in the fourth on an RBI double from Daniels. The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the fifth to regain the lead. Clark started the scoring with another RBI single, while senior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.

An RBI single from Rogers in the sixth cut the Wingate lead to one at 3-2.

The 'Dogs responded with two runs in the eighth to push the lead to five. Billings drove home the first run with a two-out RBI single, while a passed ball allowed Godinez to score, putting Wingate on top 5-2.

Mars Hill loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame, but freshman left-hander Patrick Haynes (Charlotte, N.C.) got out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout, keeping Wingate on top by three.

The Bulldogs scored three more in the ninth to take a six-run lead. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases, while Prince's two-run double made it 7-2. Somers followed with a sacrifice fly to give the 'Dogs the six-run victory.

Senior right-hander Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, moving to 6-0 on the year. The All-SAC and All-Region selection from last year allowed just one earned run on nine hits in six innings of work, striking out two. Little has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his seven appearances this year. Haynes registered his first save of the year, allowing one hit in 1 2/3 innings, striking out three. Patrick Riehl took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking five.

The Bulldogs and Lions meet for a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m.
