Mars Hill, N.C.----After dropping game one of Saturday's doubleheader 12-4 at Mars Hill, the visiting Wingate University Bulldogs got a complete game shutout from senior right-hander
Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) in a 2-0 victory in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Bulldogs take two out of three in the weekend series, moving to 17-7 overall and 12-5 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 10-17 overall and 9-9 in the conference.
Game One: Mars Hill 12, Wingate 4
Adam Daniel had a homer and five RBI to lead the Mars Hill attack.
Evan Rogers was three-for-six with an RBI and a run scored, while
Phillip Carroll was three-for-six with three RBI and two runs scored.
Tommy Scala added a pair of RBI and a run scored for the Lions, while
Dustin Jones was three-for-five with two runs scored.
Sophomore outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) was two-for-four with two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Juniors
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) each had two hits and an RBI, while junior catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) also had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI triple from Godinez. The Lions tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Rogers scored on a Wingate error.
An RBI single from Krebs put the Bulldogs on top 2-1 in the fourth, but an RBI triple from Rogers in the bottom of the inning made it 2-2.
Mars Hill exploded for five runs in the fifth to take a 7-2 advantage. Daniel had the big blow of the frame, connecting on a grand slam to help the Lions take a five-run lead.
Wingate cut the lead to four in the sixth on Cherry's RBI single, but an RBI single from Daniel in the bottom of the frame made it 8-3. An RBI single from Carroll in the seventh, along with a bases-loaded walk issued to Scala made it 10-3.
A sacrifice fly from Krebs in the eighth cut the lead to six, but the Lions scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Carroll and
Andy Runion to make the final score 12-4.
Caleb Edwards got the win, moving to 5-1 on the year. He allowed four runs on nine hits in eight innings of work, striking out six without walking a batter. Senior right-hander
Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed six earned runs on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out two.
Game 2: Wingate 2, Mars Hill 0
Wingate was held to one hit in game two, but that would be enough for Currie. Clark had the hit to go along with the lone RBI in game two for the Bulldogs. Senior designated hitter
Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.) drew a walk and was hit by a pitch in game two, scoring a run for the Bulldogs. Junior infielder
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) drew a pair of walks for Wingate in game two.
Daniel was the only Lion with multiple hits in game two, going two-for-three with two singles. Mars Hill had seven hits in the second game, but all were singles.
An error, a walk and a wild pitch in the second put runners on second and third with no outs for the Bulldogs. MHU starter
Dale Innes got out of the jam with two straight strikeouts, while the third out came throwing out Clark at home who tried to score from third on a ball that got away from the catcher.
Mars Hill tried to score on a two-out single in the second, but junior outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) threw
Dalton Eisenbath out at home from centerfield to keep the game scoreless.
The Lions started the third with two singles and a walk, loading the bases with no outs. Currie induced an infield popout, then got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the jam. Back-to-back singles and a sacrifice in the fourth put runners on second and third with one out for the Lions. Currie was again up to the challenge, getting two strikeouts to end the frame.
Somers was hit by a pitch to start the seventh inning, then went to second on a sacrifice from Spitz. Clark followed with the first hit of the game for the Bulldogs, an RBI single to right to make it 1-0. He would move up to second and then to third on wild pitches, while scoring on another wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Currie allowed a leadoff walk in the seventh, but followed by getting a strikeout, flyout and groundout to end the game.
Currie moves to 4-1 on the year. He allowed seven singles in seven innings of work, striking out six and walking two. Innes took the loss, falling to 3-2. He allowed two runs on one hit in seven innings, striking out 10 and walking three.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, hosting Belmont Abbey at 6:30 p.m.
