Bulldogs drop a pair of games on final day of Mid-South Classic

Spartanburg, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs dropped a pair of games Sunday afternoon on the final day of the 2014 Mid-South Classic. Wingate lost the opening game 2-1 against Lander, while dropping a 3-1 contest against sixth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic. The Bulldogs move to 13-7 on the season.

Lander 2, Wingate 1

Abbygale Best was one-for-two with a homer to lead the Lander attack Sunday afternoon. Destiny Clyde went one-for-three with a run scored, while Reychel Webster had a pair of hits for the Bearcats.

Junior shortstop Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) went one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Junior outfielder Hayley Whitley (Monroe, N.C.) went two-for-three with a run scored, while sophomore infielder Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) also had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.

Lander got on the board in the first, loading the bases with a walk, double and hit batsman. A wild pitch plated the first run of the contest to put the Bearcats on top 1-0.

Lander took a 2-0 lead in the second when Best led off the frame with a solo homer to left center.

Wingate got on the board in the sixth. Whitley led off the inning with a double to left center, then scored on an RBI double from Burrell.

M.K. Pegram got the win for Lander, improving to 1-4 on the year. She allowed a run on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out three and walking one. Freshman left-hander Taylor Bates (Peachland, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-5. She allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

#6 Armstrong 3, Wingate 1

Kat Vogler went three-for-three with an RBI and run scored to lead the Armstrong attack. Peyton Roth was one-for-three with an RBI, while Alexis Mercer went two-for-three with a run scored.

Freshman outfielder Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) went one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Wingate attack.

Mercer led off the game with a double, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Lacye Walker to give the Pirates an early 1-0 lead. An RBI single from Vogler in the second gave Armstrong a two-run lead.

An RBI single from Roth in the fifth gave the Pirates a 3-0 advantage.

Wingate loaded the bases in the sixth, but Whitley was tagged out at home trying to score on a wild pitch to end the inning.

Three walks loaded the bases for the Bulldogs in the seventh. A two-out RBI single from Smith got Wingate on the board, but the Bulldogs were unable to add any more runs in the inning.

Walker got the win, moving to 2-2 on the year. She allowed a run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking six. Sophomore right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 8-2. She allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work, striking out four.

Wingate returns to action Wednesday, traveling to King for a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
