Currie and Clark help Bulldogs split doubleheader against Catawba Sunday

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) tossed a complete game three-hitter in game two of Sunday afternoon's doubleheader against Catawba College, leading the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory. The Indians rallied for a 5-4 victory in game one on Sunday. The Bulldogs are 22-10 overall and 16-7 in the SAC. Catawba moves to 20-12 overall and 14-6 in the conference. Junior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) drove in five of Wingate's six runs Sunday.

Game One: Catawba 5, Wingate 4 (8 innings)

Catawba tied the game with a run in the seventh (final) inning and pushed another run across the plate in the eighth to take the victory. In the eighth, Catawba senior Ethan Satterfield greeted Wingate freshman reliever Patrick Haynes (Charlotte, N.C.) with a double. Satterfield moved to third on an error. One out later, a walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Bulldog freshman reliever Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C) entered the game. Catawba's Will Beeson reached on an RBI fielder's choice to plate Satterfield. Donahue escaped further damage by striking out Shaefer Shepard.

The Indians tied the game 4-4 with two outs in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Paul Kronenfeld . His hit scored pinch-runner Gary Williams, who was running for pinch-hitter Mario Parisi. The inning began with Parisi's single off Wingate senior starting pitcher Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.). Williams moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.

Wingate took a 3-0 lead in bottom of the first inning. Freshman second baseman Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) and junior outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) reached on singles early in the frame. Clark followed with a three-run homer to right field, his second long ball of the season.

Catawba got on the board with a single spot in the second inning, thanks to an RBI single by Shepard. Wingate answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the third, as redshirt senior left fielder Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.) contributed an RBI single.

The Indians cut the deficit to 4-3 with one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. The fourth inning run was unearned, as senior second baseman Julio Zubillaga started the inning by reaching on an error. He scored later in the fourth frame on a sacrifice fly from Jon Wallace.

Kronenfeld doubled with one out in the fifth. He moved to third on a single by Keaton Hawks and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Satterfield. Kronenfeld and Hawks had two hits each for Catawba. Five different Indians had one RBI each. Spitz had two hits for Wingate, while Clark had three of Wingate's four RBI.

Catawba senior right-hander John Tuttle pitched seven complete innings to bump his 2014 record to 5-2 overall. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits. Tuttle struck out eight and walked one. Indian senior reliever Ryan McClintock earned his sixth save with a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Haynes took the loss for the host Bulldogs. He gave up one run on one hit in one-third of an inning. Vaughan matched Tuttle by surrendering four runs (three earned). He gave up seven hits, while striking out two and walking one.

Game Two: Wingate 2, Catawba 1

Clark went two-for-three with a double and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Spitz and senior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) each added a hit and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Wingate again jumped out to an early lead, plating a pair of runs in the first inning. Serra reached on a one-out single, then went to third when Spitz reached on an error. Clark followed with a two-run double down the right field line to make it 2-0.

Catawba got on the board in the sixth when Kronenfeld led off the inning with a solo homer to right center, making it 2-1. The Indians were unable to push another run across, with Currie retiring the final six hitters he faced.

Currie moved to 6-1 on the year, allowing a run on three hits in seven innings of work, striking out five. The preseason All-SAC selection has a team-best four complete games this year. In his last three starts, Currie has three complete games, allowing just one run on 13 hits in 21 innings, striking out 20. Shepard took the loss, falling to 4-1. He allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out three.  

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, hosting Limestone at 6 p.m.
