#29 Bulldogs blank Catawba for eighth straight win

Wingate, N.C.----The 29th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs cruised to a 9-0 victory over visiting Catawba College Tuesday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action at the WU Tennis Complex. Wingate wins its eighth straight match, improving to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. The 'Dogs are a perfect 8-0 against Division II opposition this season. Catawba falls to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Senior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) teamed with junior Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) for a 9-8 win at number one doubles, prevailing 7-4 in the tiebreaker. Junior Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) and freshman Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) won 8-3 at number two doubles, while an 8-1 win at number three doubles from senior Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and sophomore Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) gave the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.

Williams won 6-1, 6-3 at number six singles, while a 6-1, 6-1 win from Tanik at number four singles clinched the victory for the Bulldogs. Winston followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number five singles, while Thomas won by the same scores at number three singles. Holland cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at number two singles, while Evers rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 win at number one singles, finishing the sweep for the Bulldogs by winning the third set tiebreaker 10-5.

Wingate is back in action Thursday, wrapping up its six-match home stand against Coker at 2 p.m.
