Bristol, Tenn.----The King University Tornado swept a doubleheader over visiting Wingate University Wednesday afternoon in NCAA Division II softball action. King won the first game 5-0, while rallying for a 2-1 victory in game two. The Tornado move to 9-11 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 13-9 on the season. The doubleheader ends a span of 18 consecutive games away from home for the Bulldogs.
Game One: King 5, Wingate 0
Cassie Ringstaff was one-for-three with an RBI and a run scored to lead the King attack in game one.
Amber Walker and
Octavia Lewis-Rand each added a hit and a run scored for the Tornado.
Sophomore catcher
Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) was one-for-three with a double to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore infielder
Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) was one-for-one in game one, while senior designated player
Kayla Saliga (Asheboro, N.C.) went one-for-two.
King got on the board in the third, plating a pair of runs without a hit. The first run scored on a Wingate error, while a squeeze bunt from
Stephanie Rodriguez made it 2-0.
The Tornado plated another run in the fourth on a Wingate error, while Ringstaff's RBI groundout in the sixth made it 4-0. Another Wingate error in the sixth inning allowed the final run of game one to score. The Bulldogs committed four errors in the opening game. Â
Hannah Light got the win, moving to 8-6 on the year. She allowed just three hits, striking out four and walking four. Sophomore right-hander
Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 8-3. She allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits in six innings of work, striking out two.
Game Two: King 2, Wingate 1
Chrissy Melcher went two-for-three with a double and an RBI to lead the King attack in game two. Lewis-Rand was one-for-three with an RBI, while
Cheyenne Delffs went one-for-three with a run scored.
Junior shortstop
Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) went one-for-two with an RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Helms had a hit and a run scored, while sophomore catcher
Jordan Wilson (Gastonia, N.C.) and freshman outfielder
Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.
Helms led off the game with a single, then stole second and scored on an RBI single from Burrell to give the 'Dogs an early 1-0 lead.
That would be all of the scoring until the fifth, when Melcher's RBI single tied the game at one.
The Tornado won the game in walk-off fashion in the seventh. Delffs led off the frame with an infield single, then went to second on a sacrifice. She scored on the game-winning RBI double from Lewis-Rand to give King the 2-1 victory.
Light got the win in game two, going the distance while allowing one run on six hits while striking out five. Freshman left-hander
Taylor Bates (Peachland, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-6. She allowed two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out four.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, returning home for a doubleheader against Limestone at 1 p.m. Â It will be the first home games for Wingate in over a month.Â
