Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs cruised to a 10-2 victory in game one Saturday afternoon against visiting Anderson University, while using a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two for a 4-3 walk-off victory in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate moves to 15-3 overall and 10-3 in the SAC. Anderson falls to 8-15 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
Game One: Wingate 10, Anderson 2
Freshman infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) and senior outfielder
Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) each went two-for-four with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense in game one. Junior first baseman
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) was three-for-five with two RBI and a run scored, while junior outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) went three-for-four with a triple and two runs scored for the Bulldogs.
Jonathan Zalud and
Paul Como each went one-for-four with an RBI to lead the Anderson offense.
Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with Billings leading off the frame with his third homer of the year, a solo shot to left. Serra followed with an inside-the-park homer to center field, his second homer of the year. Junior catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) followed with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Cherry's RBI single to make it 3-0.
Junior infielder
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) led off the second with a double, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Billings to push the lead to four. Spitz started the third with a single, then scored on Cherry's RBI single to make it 5-0.
Billings ripped a two-out triple down the right field line in the fourth, then scored on a wild pitch. Spitz started the fifth inning with a triple to left center, then scored on Clark's sacrifice fly to push the Wingate advantage to 7-0.
The Bulldogs scratched another run across in the sixth when junior shortstop
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) lined a one-out double down the left field line, then scored on Serra's sacrifice fly. Wingate scored two more in the seventh to hit double figures. Senior infielder
Matt Barrier (Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) started it with an RBI single, while an Anderson error put the 'Dogs on top 10-0. Â
The Trojans got on the board in the ninth, loading the bases via three walks. Zalud drove home the first run by reaching on an error, while an RBI groundout from Como made the final margin 10-2.
Senior right-hander
Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.) dominated to move to 5-0 on the year. The All-SAC and All-Region selection in 2013 allowed just two singles in seven innings of work, striking out five and walking one to lower his season ERA to 1.00.
Spencer Earle took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out four.
Game Two: Wingate 4, Anderson 3
Billings was two-for-four with an RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Godinez went two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored, while Serra was one-for-three with a double, RBI and run scored for the Bulldogs.
Nate Galliford went one-for-three with a double and two RBI to lead the Anderson attack.
Steven Cooper was one-for-three with an RBI and a run scored, while
Josh Hickman went two-for-three with a run scored for the Trojans.
Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Serra got it started with a one-out double to left, went to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Spitz.
The Trojans answered with three runs in the third to take the lead. Cooper tied the game at one with an RBI single. Galliford followed with a two-run double to left to make it 3-1.
Wingate cut the lead to one in the sixth. Godinez and Billings started the rally with one-out singles, while an error moved the runners to second and third. Serra drove home Godinez with an RBI groundout to make it 3-2.
That would be the score in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and nobody on, Prince and junior pinch hitter
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) drew walks. Godinez then came to the plate and ripped on up the middle, plating freshman pinch-runner
Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) to tie the game at three. Billings came to the plate with runners on first and second and hit the first pitch he saw through the right side, plating freshman pinch-runner
Jack Sherrill (Willow Spring, N.C.) to give the 'Dogs another walk-off win.
Freshman right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) got the win, moving to 1-0. He retired the only batter he faced, inducing a groundout in the top of the seventh with runners on second and third. Senior right-hander
Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) allowed three runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out nine.
Landon Beck took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning of work, striking out one and walking two.
The Bulldogs and Trojans wrap up the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.Â
