Wingate cruises to 12-3 victory over Limestone Wednesday night

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs piled up 15 hits Wednesday night en route to a 12-3 victory over visiting Limestone College in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate improves to 23-10 overall, while the Saints fall to 18-18 on the season.

Junior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) had three doubles, three RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Junior outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) added a double, two RBI and two runs scored, while freshman infielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) went three-for-five with an RBI and three runs scored. Junior shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) added a pair of hits and two runs scored for the Bulldogs, while senior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) drove in two runs.

Chad Balderman went two-for-three with an RBI to lead the Limestone attack. Michael Newcomb was two-for-two with a run scored, while Chris Scura added an RBI for the Saints. Julian Bridges also had a pair of hits and a run scored for Limestone.

Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Clark lined an RBI double to left center. Limestone answered with two in the third to take its first lead of the night. Scura plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, while Balderman's RBI single made it 2-1.

Clark tied the game in the bottom of the inning with his second RBI double, while an RBI single from junior infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) put the 'Dogs on top 3-2.

The Bulldogs plated three more runs in the fourth inning to add to their lead. The first run scored on a Limestone error, while a two-run single from Serra made it 6-2.

Wingate added four more runs in the sixth to push the lead to eight. The first run scored on a Limestone error, while a two-run double from Spitz made it a seven-run game. Spitz then scored on a passed ball to make it 10-2. An RBI single from Billings in the seventh made it an eight-run Wingate lead.

The Saints took advantage of a Wingate error to score a run in the top of the eighth. Clark's third RBI double came in the bottom of the eighth, making the final score 12-3.

Junior right-hander Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) got the win, moving to 2-1 on the year. He allowed two unearned runs on six hits in seven innings of work, striking out three and walking one. Freshman right-hander Cameron Price (Charlotte, N.C.) worked the final two innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits while striking out three. Trey Stallings took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits in three innings of work, striking out three and walking one.

The Bulldogs are back in action Friday, traveling to UNC Pembroke for a 6 p.m. start. Wingate will host the Braves for a doubleheader Saturday at 3 p.m.
