Box Score Harrogate, Tenn.----The second-seeded Anderson University Trojans scored at least one run in each of the first five innings Friday afternoon en route to a 7-3 victory over the third-seeded Bulldogs of Wingate University on day two of the Food Lion SAC softball tournament. Anderson moves to 40-10 overall, while improving to 2-0 in the tournament. Wingate falls to 33-17 on the season and 1-1 in the tournament.
Wingate will return to action later Friday afternoon, taking on top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in an elimination game. That game is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. but could be later due to weather delays from Friday morning. Anderson returns to action Saturday afternoon, taking on the winner of Friday's Tusculum vs. Catawba contest.
Abby Child had a pair of homers and three RBI to lead the Anderson attack.
Danielle Swygert added a double and two RBI, while
Molly Child had an RBI and two runs scored for the Trojans.
Sophomore catcher
Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) went one-for-two with a double, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Senior designated player
Kayla Saliga (Asheboro, N.C.) added a double and an RBI, while junior shortstop
Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore infielder
Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) started the game with a single, then went to second on a walk. A two-run double to center from Laskey put the 'Dogs on the board. Saliga followed with an RBI double down the left field line to put Wingate on top by three.
Anderson answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, cutting the Wingate lead to one on Abby Child's two-run homer to center. A sacrifice fly from
Jessica Neidigh in the second tied the game at three.
The Trojans took the lead in the third when Abby Child led off the frame with a solo homer to left. Swygert's two-run double in the fourth made it 6-3, while Molly Child's RBI single in the fifth put Anderson on top by four.
Katelyn Howser got the win for Anderson, improving to 17-5. She allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking four. Sophomore right-hander
Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 22-8. She allowed six earned runs on eight hits in five innings, striking out two and walking three.
