Wingate rallies for 7-4 victory at Limestone Tuesday

Box Score Gaffney, S.C.----The Wingate University baseball team rallied with four runs in the last two innings to take a 7-4 NCAA Division II victory over host Limestone College at Founders FCU Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Wingate is 32-16 overall, while Limestone falls to 21-30 overall. The loss concludes Limestone's season.
 
Three Bulldogs had two RBI each: junior center fielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.), redshirt junior first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and sophomore designated hitter Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.). Cherry contributed the game-winning RBI, while Spitz posted a double. Wingate junior third baseman Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) had two hits in four at-bats, including his second home run of the season.
 
For Limestone, junior first baseman Kyle Booth (Scranton, Pa.) and senior right fielder Cooper Gunter (Leesville, S.C.) had two hits each. Senior designated hitter Avi Ahlzadeh (Dunwoody, Ga.) had a double in three at-bats. Ahlzadeh and Gunter were two of four Saints with one RBI each.
 
Wingate entered the top of the eighth inning down 4-3. Bulldog senior right fielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) greeted LC junior reliever Caleb Shelley (Kevil, Ky.) with a single. Spitz drew a walk. One out later, Serra stole third and Spitz stole second. Cherry followed with a single to center, scoring both runners and giving Wingate a 5-4 edge.
 
In the Bulldog ninth, junior shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) and freshman second baseman Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) started the inning with back-to-back singles off Limestone graduate student reliever Cameron Culp (Gaffney, S.C.). Both runners advance one base each on a wild pitch. Two outs later, Spitz was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Three pitches later, Krebs contributed a two-RBI single to score Godinez and Billings with insurance runs.
 
Limestone took an early 1-0 lead with a single spot in the second. Booth led off the inning with a walk. One out later, he scored on Ahlzadeh's RBI double. Wingate scored twice in third and once in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
 
In the third inning, Spitz contributed a two-RBI double to score Godinez and redshirt senior left fielder Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.). Godinez walked to start the third frame, while Somers reached on a single. In the fourth inning, Prince hit a home run to left center on a 3-2 offering to make the score 3-1 Wingate.
 
The Saints scored one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 4-3 edge. In the fifth, Gunter singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a double-play groundout. In the sixth, Limestone scored runs on an RBI single and a Bulldog wild pitch.
 
Wingate freshman reliever Patrick Haynes (Charlotte, N.C.) earned his first collegiate win Tuesday. In 1 2/3 innings, he gave up two hits and struck out two to even his 2014 record at 1-1 overall. Classmate Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) recorded his first collegiate save with a five-batter ninth inning. He gave up two hits with one strikeout. Bulldog freshman starter Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) worked six innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked two.
 
Shelley took the loss to fall to 3-2 overall. In one inning, he surrendered two runs on two hits. Shelley walked one batter. Culp allowed two runs in his only inning of work. Limestone junior starter Jameson McGrane (Potomac, Md.) worked four innings. He gave up three earned runs on three hits. McGrane struck out two, hit two batters and walked one.
 
The South Atlantic Conference member Bulldogs return home this weekend to host Conference Carolinas rival Erskine College for a three-game series at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The EC Flying Fleet visit for a 6 p.m. single game Friday night; the two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. Wingate will honor seven seniors in a pre-game ceremony Saturday.
