Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) notched his fourth straight complete game Saturday afternoon, tossing a two-hit shutout against 16th-ranked UNC Pembroke in game two of Saturday's NCAA Division II baseball doubleheader at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. UNCP held on for a 9-6 win in game one, while the 'Dogs prevailed 2-0 in game two. Wingate moves to 24-12 overall, while the Braves go to 27-11 on the season. Today was the first time UNCP has been shutout in 154 games, dating back to the 2011 season.
Game One: UNC Pembroke 9, Wingate 6Jordan Edgerton went four-for-five to lead the UNCP attack in game one, with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored.
Brett Huffman went two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored, while
Daniel Fraga added an RBI and two runs scored.
Dalton Knight had a double, RBI and run scored for the Braves, while
Zade Denton added an RBI.

The Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, getting an RBI double from Knight, who then scored on Denton's RBI single. Fraga's RBI groundout in the second made it 3-0.
Edgerton led off the third with his first homer of the day, a solo shot to right to push the UNCP lead to four. The Braves added three more runs in the fifth. Edgerton plated the first run with an RBI single, while a Wingate error and Huffman RBI single made it 7-0. Edgerton's RBI single in the sixth put the Braves on top by eight.
Wingate got on the board in the seventh, with Somers and Godinez starting the frame with singles. They would both score when Serra connected on his fourth homer of the year, a three-run shot to right to make it 8-3.
The Bulldogs added three more in the eighth inning to cut the lead to two. Godinez plated the first two runs with an RBI double to right center. He would score on Serra's RBI single to make it 8-6. A walk and single would load the bases with two outs, putting the tying run in scoring position and go-ahead run on first, but UNCP reliever
Zach Andrews got out of the jam with by inducing an inning-ending groundout.
The Braves added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Edgerton connected on his second homer of the day and fifth of the year, a solo shot to right center to make the final margin 9-6.
Garrett Hickman got the win, moving to 8-1. He allowed six runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking six. Andrews got the save, working 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out one. Senior right-hander
Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-3. He allowed five earned runs on 10 hits in five innings of work, striking out three.
Game Two: Wingate 2, UNC Pembroke 0Serra went three-for-three with two doubles and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Junior catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was one-for-three with two RBI, while freshman infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) added a hit and a run scored.
After three scoreless innings, Serra led off the fourth with a double down the left field line. He went to third on a single from junior outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.), then scored on Clark's RBI groundout.
Wingate added a run in the sixth, which started with a leadoff single from Billings. He went to third when Serra ripped a double off the fence in right. Clark's RBI single put the 'Dogs on top 2-0.
UNCP did not get a base runner until a two-out single in the third, when
Max Gagnon grounded one through the left side of the infield. Currie finished that frame with a strikeout, then shut the Braves down in order in the fourth and fifth innings.
After striking out the leadoff hitter in the sixth, Currie hit the next two batters.
Drew Cole singled to left and Gagnon tried to score from second but was gunned down at home on a perfect throw from Somers. Currie set the Braves down in order in the seventh, finishing the game with his fourth strikeout of the day.
Currie moves to 7-1 on the year. The preseason All-SAC selection notched his fifth complete game and fourth shutout of the season, allowing two singles while striking out four without walking a batter. In his last four starts, Currie is 4-0 with four complete games, allowing one run while striking out 24.
Andy Sullivan took the loss, falling to 4-1. He allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out two without walking a batter.
The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, hosting a doubleheader against Mount Olive, with game one starting at 3 p.m.
