#19 Mount Olive takes two from Bulldogs Tuesday

Wingate, N.C.----The 19th-ranked University of Mount Olive Trojans swept an NCAA Division II baseball doubleheader against Wingate University Tuesday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Trojans won the first game 10-6, while winning 2-1 in eight innings in game two. The Trojans improve to 29-10 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 24-14 on the season.
 
Game #1 – Mount Olive 10, Wingate 6
 
The Trojans bolted to an 8-0 lead and withstood a six-run Bulldog sixth inning to take the victory. UMO junior right fielder Chase Edwards was three-for-four with a homer and two RBI, while senior center fielder Jay Gonzalez was three-for-five with one RBI. Three Trojan teammates had two hits each; six Mount Olive batters contributed at least one RBI.
 
For Wingate, redshirt junior first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) was two-for-four with a double and two RBI. Bulldog junior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was two-for-four with one run scored.
 
The Bulldogs sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth inning. Wingate loaded the bases with one out, thanks to three singles by junior center fielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.), Clark and sophomore pinch-hitter Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.). Cherry followed with a two-RBI single to left-center field, scoring Spitz and Clark and moving Krebs to third.
 
Wingate junior designated hitter Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) doubled to right-center field to score Krebs and move Cherry to third. UMO junior lefty Taylor Carr entered in relief. Redshirt senior left fielder Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.) greeted Carr by singling up the middle, plating Cherry and Simmons.
 
Bulldog junior shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) doubled to put runners on second and third. Carr worked the count to 2-2 on Wingate freshman second baseman Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) before giving way to senior left-handed reliever Zach Bernard, who retired Billings on an RBI groundout to shortstop. Somers scored Wingate's sixth run on the play.
 
Mount Olive scored three runs in the second and two runs in the third off Wingate junior starting pitcher Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.). Trojan sophomore second baseman Zak Orrison had a two-RBI single in the second frame. UMO junior catcher Justin Manning contributed a two-RBI single in the third inning.
 
The Trojans extended their lead to 8-0 with a three runs on four hits in the sixth inning. The big hit was a two-RBI double by junior designated hitter Willi Martin. In the UMO seventh, Edwards hit his fourth homer of the season inside the left-field foul pole to plate Gonzalez, who reached on a bunt single.
 
Campbell University junior transfer Jordy Farthing picked up the pitching win for the Trojans, improving his 2014 ledger to 5-0 overall. In 5 1/3 innings, Farthing allowed five earned runs on eight hits. He struck out two and walked one. Bernard collected his fourth save with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless work. He gave up one hit while striking out one and walking one.
 
Morgan (2-2 overall) took the loss for the host Bulldogs. In 4 2/3 innings, Morgan surrendered five earned runs on eight hits. He struck out one and walked six. Wingate sophomore relievers Dusty Ayscue (Louisburg, N.C.) and Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) combined to allow five earned runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings. Both Ayscue and Newsome struck out two Trojans each.

Game Two: Mount Olive 2, Wingate 1 (8 innings)

Luke Barry went one-for-one with a double and an RBI to lead the Mount Olive attack in game two. Gonzalez was one-for-two with two runs scored, while DeAndre Allen added a pair of hits for the Trojans.

Billings had a hit and an RBI for the Bulldogs, while Clark went two-for-three. Somers was one-for-three with a run scored.

Wingate got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth. Somers started the inning with a single, then went to second on a sacrifice. He scored on an RBI single from Billings to make it 1-0.

Mount Olive tied the game in the sixth, loading the bases via a single, hit batsman and walk. The Trojans scored their run on a double play, making it 1-1.


No team would score in the seventh, sending the game to extras. Gonzalez walked to start the top of the eighth, then stole second and third. He would score on Barry's RBI double down the left field line, making the final margin 2-1.

Josh Frederick got the win, moving to 3-1. He allowed a run on seven hits in eight innings of work, striking out six and walking one. Sophomore right-hander Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) took the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed a run on two hits in three innings of work, striking out three and walking three. Senior right-hander Ryne Poplin (Norwood, N.C.) allowed just one run on four hits in five innings, striking out four.

Wingate returns to action Friday, traveling to Carson-Newman to open a three-game SAC series at 3 p.m.
