Box Score 2 Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs rallied for a 4-3 win in game one of Tuesday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Coker College, while the Cobras responded with a 3-2 win in game two. The Bulldogs move to 30-14 overall and 12-4 in the SAC. Coker is now 16-21 overall and 5-11 in the conference. Wingate remains one game ahead of Lenoir-Rhyne in first place in the league standings.
Game One: Wingate 4, Coker 3Sophomore infielder
Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) went two-for-four with a double, homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Junior shortstop
Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) added a hit and an RBI while sophomore catcher
Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) was two-for-three for the Bulldogs.
Sydney Weatherford went two-for-four with a homer and three RBI to lead the Coker attack in game one.
Katelyn Szupello was one-for-one with a run scored, while
Stacy Burr also had a hit and a run scored for the Cobras.
After four scoreless innings, Coker got on the board in the fifth. Burr started the frame with a double, while Szupello followed with a walk. Weatherford put the Cobras on top 3-0 with a three-run homer down the left field line.
Wingate had the answer, putting two on via a walk and single in the bottom of the fifth. Helms connected on her eighth homer of the season, a three-run shot to center to tie the game at three.
Helms led off the seventh with a double in the left center field gap, then went to third on a wild pitch. She scored the game-winning run on Burrell's walk-off RBI single.
Sophomore right-hander
Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 19-6 on the year. She allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings of work.
Tabitha Allen took the loss, falling to 4-6. She allowed a run on four hits in two innings of work.
Game Two: Coker 3, Wingate 2Tayler Barcomb was two-for-three with a homer and two RBI to lead the Coker attack in game two.
Lauren Phillips added an RBI for the Cobras, while
Carley Bailey went two-for-three with a run scored.
Helms had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Laskey went one-for-two with a double, while freshman first baseman
Amy Wingfield (Mechanicsville, Va.) was one-for-two with a run scored for the Bulldogs.
Coker took the lead in the second when Barcomb connected on a two-run homer to left.
Wingate had the answer in the third when Helms connected on her second homer of the day and ninth of the year, a two-run shot to center to make it 2-2.
That would be the score in the seventh, when the Cobras loaded the bases via two singles and a walk. Phillips chopped a bouncer over the Wingate infield, plating the go-ahead run to give Coker the 3-2 win.
Phillips got the win for the Cobras, tossing four shutout innings to move to 10-9. Freshman left-hander
Taylor Bates (Peachland, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 9-8. She allowed three runs on nine hits in seven innings of work, striking out one. Wingate stranded nine base runners in the final five innings.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, traveling to Brevard for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
