Bulldogs wrap up regular season with doubleheader split against Erskine

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs rebounded from a 14-3 loss in game one Saturday afternoon, prevailing 7-2 in game two of an NCAA Division II baseball doubleheader at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field against visiting Erskine College. The Bulldogs take two out of three in the weekend series, finishing the regular season 34-17 overall. The Flying Fleet also move to 34-17 on the season.

Game One: Erskine 14, Wingate 3

Brandon Overstreet was three-for-five with a homer and three RBI, while Andrew Kozak added three hits and three RBI for the Flying Fleet. Chase Corn homered, drove in two runs and scored three times, while Richard Dix was one-for-three with two RBI. Zach Smith had a homer and three runs scored for Erskine, while Teddy Heiser was two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.

Senior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) was four-for-five with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Junior outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was three-for-three with two doubles and a run scored, while junior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) went one-for-three with an RBI.

Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the first when Spitz ripped a two-out double to left center, then scored on Clark's RBI single.

Erskine got on the board in the fourth, taking a 2-1 lead on Corn's two-run homer to right.

The Flying Fleet plated seven runs in the sixth to push the lead to eight. Overstreet started it with a two-run homer, while Dix added a two-run single. Heiser's RBI double made it 7-1. Kozak's two-run double put the Flying Fleet on top 9-1.

Erskine scored four more runs in the seventh on just one hit. The first run scored on an error, while a bases-loaded walk plated the second run. Kozak added an RBI single, while a bases-loaded hit batsman made it 13-1.

Serra connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to make it 13-3. Smith led off the eighth with a solo homer to make the final margin 14-3.

Wes Schuler got the win, moving to 6-2 on the year. He allowed a run on nine hits in six innings of work. Senior right-hander Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-4. He allowed nine runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking three.

Game Two: Wingate 7, Erskine 2

Spitz had a homer and three RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two, while junior first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) was two-for-three with a homer and two runs scored. Junior shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) had two doubles, an RBI and a run scored, while freshman infielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.

Smith was two-for-four with two RBI to lead the Erskine offense in game two. Corn went three-for-four with a run scored for the Flying Fleet.

Erskine plated a run in the first when Corn reached on a two-out double, then scored on Smith's RBI single.

Wingate tied the game in the second when Cherry connected on his third homer of the year, a solo shot to right center to make it 1-1. The Flying Fleet regained the lead in the third on another RBI single from Smith.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the third, which started with a Godinez double and Billings single. Spitz then provided the big blow of the inning, a three-run homer to right center, his third long ball of the year to give the 'Dogs a 4-2 advantage.

Wingate scored two more runs in the fourth. Cherry started the inning with a single, then scored when sophomore outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) ripped an RBI double off the fence in left center. Krebs would then score on an RBI single from Billings to make it 6-2.

Senior infielder Matt Barrier (Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) started the sixth with a double, then scored on an RBI double from Godinez to make it 7-2.

That would be plenty for senior right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.), who notched his ninth win of the year and 25th career victory. He registered his league-best sixth complete game of the season, while moving into seventh in SAC history with 309 2/3 career innings pitched. Currie struck out five and walked two in seven innings of work, scattering 10 hits while allowing two runs, moving to 9-1 on the year. Zach Mcallister took the loss, falling to 5-4. He allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings, striking out six without walking a batter.
