Wingate, N.C.----The number 47 Wingate University women's tennis team started its 2015 South Atlantic Conference schedule with a convincing 8-1 triumph over Mars Hill University Saturday at the WU Tennis Complex. Four Bulldog student-athletes won two matches each as Wingate dropped only one pro-set and one regular set on the afternoon.
Wingate has won 26 straight SAC regular season matches; the Bulldogs are 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. Mars Hill falls to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the SAC. Wingate entertains local rival Johnson C. Smith University Sunday at 1 p.m.
"It feels good to get the first win under our belts," Wingate head women's tennis coach
Michael Cabana says. "We need to improve and play better moving forward. We will look to get better tomorrow and into next week with some very tough matches on the horizon."
Bulldog freshman
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) won two matches in her WU Tennis Complex dual match debut. In doubles, she teamed with
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) to take an 8-0 decision at the number two flight. Ternera dispatched MHU freshman
Jasha Geerdink (Apeldorn, The Netherlands) 7-5, 6-3 in the number one singles match.
Thomas did not lose a game Saturday, as she blanked Lion sophomore
Grace Diepenbrock (Wilmington, N.C.) 6-0, 6-0 in the number five singles match. Wingate junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) also won two matches each for the home-standing Bulldogs.
