Wingate, N.C.----The 47th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs dropped just four sets Monday afternoon, cruising to a 9-0 victory over Johnson C. Smith University in NCAA Division II women's tennis action. Wingate improves to 2-3 overall, while the Golden Bulls fall to 1-4 on the season.
Wingate's freshman duo of
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) won 8-0 at number one doubles, while junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) won by the same score at number two doubles. Sophomore
Sierra Parsons (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman
Jana Mueller (Frankfurt, Germany) picked up an 8-1 win at number three doubles.
Sophomore
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) won 6-1, 6-0 at number one singles, while Womeodu prevailed 6-2, 6-0 at number two singles. Tanik, Garcia, Parsons and Mueller all registered 6-0, 6-0 victories at number three, four, five and six singles.
Wingate is back in action Thursday, hosting No. 24 Francis Marion at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs were slated to travel to Coker Tuesday, but that match has been postponed due to weather.
