Due West, S.C.----Wingate University sophomore
Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) scored a career-high five goals Wednesday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a 20-9 victory at Erskine College in NCAA Division II women's lacrosse action. Wingate improves to 2-2 overall, while the Flying Fleet fall to 1-3 on the season.
Andrews did her damage in seven shots, including six shots on goal. Sophomore
Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) and freshman
Madison LaBarbera (Colchester, Conn.) each contributed three goals and an assist. Freshman
Jaclyn Chiesa (Canton, Ga.) added two goals and an assist, while sophomore
Paulena Dempsey (Jarrettsville, Md.) also had two goals for the Bulldogs.
Andrews and Bounds scored in the first five minutes to put Wingate on top 2-0. Erskine answered with two goals, tying the game 2-2 on a
Samantha Burns goal. The 'Dogs responded by reeling off five consecutive goals. Sophomore
Allie Holland (Ocala, Fla.) started the spurt, while Bounds capped it with a goal at the 10:13 mark, making it 7-2.
The Flying Fleet used a
Mackenzie Brown goal to cut the lead to four, but a Dempsey goal made it 8-3. Back-to-back goals from Burns got Erskine to within three at 8-5 with 1:28 to go in the half. Chiesa scored one second before halftime, give the Bulldogs a 9-5 edge.
Wingate scored the first three goals of the second half, taking a 12-5 advantage on a LaBarbera goal. After a goal from Burns cut the lead to six, the Bulldogs countered with goals from Andrews and LaBarbera to make it 14-6. Chiesa added a pair of goals in a five-minute span, making it 17-8 with 12 minutes to go. Wingate scored three goals in the final nine minutes, with two of those coming from Andrews. Junior
Emily Nosek (Bel Air, Md.) added a goal and an assist in the late flurry.
Wingate out-shot Erskine 42-22 on the day, while picking up 22 ground balls compared to Erskine's 20. Freshman
Nicole Hinkle (Fallston, Md.) had seven saves for the Bulldogs. Sophomore
Morgan Insel (Plantation, Fla.) picked up a team-high three ground balls.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Brevard at 12 p.m.
