Bulldogs prevail 6-3 Friday to hand Tusculum first loss of the season

In a battle of SAC unbeatens, the Wingate University Bulldogs went 2-1 in doubles play and 4-2 in singles play Friday afternoon, picking up a key 6-3 victory over visiting Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action. Wingate improves to 8-3 overall and 6-0 in the SAC. The Pioneers fall to 9-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Sophomore Connor Kudrick (Spring, Texas) and freshman Amir Zari (Jerusalem, Israel) teamed for an 8-6 win at number two doubles, while an 8-4 victory from senior Josh Eardley (Newcastle, England) and sophomore Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) at number three doubles put Wingate on top 2-1 heading to singles play.

Zari bounced back after dropping the opening set 6-2 at number two singles, rallying to take the second set 6-2 and the third set 6-4. Kudrick won 7-6, 7-6 at number four singles, winning the first set tiebreaker 10-4 and second set tiebreaker 10-7. Pezzoli won the clincher at number five singles, prevailing 6-0 and 6-4. Freshman Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) added a 6-2, 7-5 victory at number six singles.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Carson-Newman at 11 a.m. on Senior Day.
