Wingate, N.C.----The 47th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs won their 32nd consecutive SAC match Friday afternoon, defeating the 36th-ranked Tusculum College Pioneers 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. The Bulldogs improve to 7-4 overall and 6-0 in the SAC. The Pioneers fall to 10-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Senior
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) and sophomore
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) teamed for an 8-5 win at number one doubles for the Bulldogs. Junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) prevailed 8-4 at number three doubles to put Wingate on top 2-1 heading to singles play.
Freshman
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at number three singles. Tanik won 6-4, 6-2 at number four singles to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead. Thomas won the clincher for Wingate at number five singles. She cruised to a 6-0 win in the first set, while following with a 6-4 win in set two to give the 'Dogs their fifth win of the day.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Carson-Newman at 11 a.m. on Senior Day.
