Colorado Mesa claims 16-6 NCAA Division II victory over Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----Six Colorado Mesa University student-athletes scored multiple goals, leading the Mavericks to a 16-6 NCAA Division II women's lacrosse victory over Wingate University at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field Wednesday afternoon. The CMU Mavericks are 6-3 overall, while the Wingate Bulldogs are 7-5 overall.
 
Colorado Mesa freshman midfield Jenny Lange (Seal Beach, Calif.) had four goals and one assist to lead the visitors. CMU junior attack Olivia Porcaro (Aspen, Colo.) had three goals. For Wingate, sophomore midfield Paulena Dempsey (Jarrettsville, Md.) had three goals, while sophomore midfield Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) had two scores.
 
Dempsey gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 28:16 mark. Lange got the visitors on the board 45 seconds later. Wingate junior midfield Emily Nosek (Bel Air, Md.) gave the Bulldogs their lead with her 20th goal of the season at the 24:55 mark. The Mavericks responded with a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach.
 
Lange started the run, while Porcaro and junior midfield Ashley Eickhoff (Yorba Linda, Calif.) contributed two goals each to the flurry. CMU freshman midfield Jessica Cook (Las Vegas, Nevada) completed the run, scoring on an assist from classmate Hannah Payton (Loveland, Colo.) with 10 minutes to go in the first frame. The Cook goal gave the Mavs an 8-2 advantage.
 
Dempsey scored on an assist from junior team captain Erin Murphy (Mooresville, N.C.) with 7:31 to play in the opening period, but the Bulldogs would get no closer. Colorado Mesa led 11-3 at intermission and built the lead to as many as 10 goals with 22 minutes left to play in the second stanza.
 
Colorado Mesa outshot Wingate 30-23, including a 19-10 edge in the first half. The Bulldogs had 42 ground balls, compared to 38 for the Mavericks. Wingate committed 22 turnovers to 18 miscues for Colorado Mesa.
 
Wingate freshman goalie Nicole Hinkle (Fallston, Md.) took the loss, allowing 16 goals and recording 10 saves in 60 minutes. Colorado Mesa used two goalies Wednesday. Sophomore goalie Jillian Pfeifer (Massapequa, N.Y.) played the first half, giving up three goals and posting three saves. CMU junior net minder Kady Herzog (Las Vegas, Nevada) played the second half. She had eight saves, while surrendering three goals in the final 30 minutes.
 
The Bulldogs return to South Atlantic Conference play Saturday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 1 p.m. Colorado Mesa concludes its North Carolina tour Friday, visiting Mount Olive for a 5 p.m. contest.
