Charlotte, N.C.----The 48th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs erased a 4-1 deficit Wednesday afternoon, storming back for a 5-4 victory at No. 28 Queens University in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. Wingate notches its 34th consecutive SAC win, improving to 9-4 overall and 8-0 in the SAC. The Royals suffer their first setback of the year, falling to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Queens took two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Wingate's lone victory came from freshmen
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela), who prevailed 9-8 at number two doubles for the Bulldogs.
Queens won at number one and three singles to take a 4-1 advantage. Junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) picked up a pivotal 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory at number two singles to get the 'Dogs on the board in singles play. Senior
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at number five singles to make the match 4-3.
Sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) notched a 6-2, 7-5 win at number four singles to tie the match 4-4. It was the freshman Garcia who won the deciding match at number six singles. She won the first set 7-6, while prevailing 7-5 in set two to keep Wingate unbeaten in SAC play.
The Bulldogs are back in action Friday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 2 p.m. start.
