Salisbury, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs cruised to a 9-0 victory at Catawba College Wednesday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. Wingate improves to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Indians fall to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Wingate's number one doubles team of senior
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) and sophomore
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) started things off with an 8-4 win, while freshmen
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) prevailed 8-2 at number two doubles. Junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) teamed with sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) for an 8-0 win at number three doubles to give the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.
Ternera won 6-4, 7-5 at number one singles, while Holland prevailed 8-3 at number two singles. Womeodu won 6-1, 6-0 at number three singles, while Tanik added a 6-3, 6-1 victory at number four singles. Thomas and Garcia both picked up 8-1 wins at five and six singles to finish the match.
Wingate is back in action Sunday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial for an 11 a.m. start.
