Box Score 2 Greeneville, Tenn.----The Wingate University Bulldogs committed five errors Saturday afternoon, leading to five unearned runs as Tusculum College swept a doubleheader in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. Tusculum won the first game 6-2, while prevailing 3-2 in the second game. The Pioneers improve to 10-6 overall and 8-3 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 13-5 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
Game One: Tusculum 6, Wingate 2Chris Waylock was one-for-three with two RBI to lead the Tusculum attack in game one.
Scott Gibson and
Creighton Wilke each added an RBI and a run scored for the Pioneers, while
Jeovanny Tolentino was two-for-four with an RBI.
Senior outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) had a homer to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was two-for-four with a double and an RBI, while senior infielder
Blake Prince (Cutler Bay, Fla.) went three-for-four with a run scored.
Tusculum took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Wilke. Wingate tied it in the third when Prince started the inning with a single, then scored on an RBI double from Billings.
The Pioneers regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when
J.J. Wesley led off the frame with a triple, then scored on an error. An RBI single from Tolentino in the fourth put Tusculum on top by two.
Wingate cut into the lead in the sixth when Spitz led off the inning with his league-best seventh homer of the year, a solo shot to left center to make it 3-2.
The Pioneers scored three times in the seventh to take a four-run advantage. The inning started with an error, while Gibson's RBI single pushed the lead to two. Waylock added a two-run single to make the final margin 6-2.
Placido Torres got the win, moving to 2-1. He allowed two runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out 12 and walking one.
Devan Watts got the save, tossing 2 1/3 shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts. Senior right-hander
Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-1. He allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings of work, striking out two and walking two.
Game Two: Tusculum 3, Wingate 2Jalen Shuffler was two-for-two with a pair of RBI to lead the Tusculum attack. Wesley went two-for-four with a run scored for the Pioneers.
Senior first baseman
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) was one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Spitz was one-for-three with a run scored, while junior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-three.
Wingate scored a pair of runs in the fourth to take the lead. Spitz started the frame with a single, then moved to second on a hit batsman. A wild pitch and passed ball allowed Spitz to score, while Cherry added an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Tusculum tied it with a pair of runs in the fifth. A Walk and single put two runners on, while a two-out, two-run triple from Shuffler made it 2-2.
That would be the score entering the bottom of the seventh, when Tolentino reached on a one-out, two-base error. After a strikeout, a two-out throwing error allowed Tolentino to score from second, giving the Pioneers the win.
McKenly Berry got the win, moving to 2-2. He allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out six without walking a batter. Redshirt freshman right-hander
Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-3. He allowed two earned runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking two.
The two teams are back in action Sunday, wrapping up the three-game series at 1 p.m.
