Brevard, N.C.----The regular season SAC champion Wingate University Bulldogs are the number one seed in this week's South Atlantic Conference women's tennis tournament, which will take place on the campus of Brevard College this weekend. Wingate will play its first match Friday afternoon. The championship match is slated for Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs will play the winner of the Newberry vs. Anderson match. The Wolves and Trojans are scheduled to play Thursday evening in a match that has already been delayed due to rain. Newberry is the four seed while Anderson is the number five seed. Tusculum has the other first-round bye this weekend. The Pioneers will face the winner of Thursday's Queens vs. Coker match. Friday's semifinal matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. while the championship match will take place Saturday at 12 p.m.

The Bulldogs collected their fifth consecutive regular season SAC title in 2015, going 11-0 in conference play. Wingate has won 37 consecutive league matches and 48 of its last 49 overall. The 'Dogs have gone undefeated in SAC play four of the past five years. Wingate won the SAC Tournament in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The Bulldogs were knocked off in the semifinals in the 2014 SAC Tournament.

Wingate will face the Newberry-Anderson winner in the semifinals. The Bulldogs won 8-1 at Newberry earlier in the season, while prevailing 6-3 against Anderson. It was Newberry that upset the top-seeded Bulldogs in last year's SAC Tournament. In the regular season meeting in 2015, Wingate cruised to 8-3 victories in all three doubles matches, while going 5-1 in singles. The Bulldogs went 2-1 in doubles play at Anderson, while winning at three, four, five and six singles. Freshmen Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) both went 2-0 on the day, along with sophomore Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.).

Wingate is led by Tanik, the second team All-SAC singles player who also earned honorable mention All-SAC doubles honors with junior Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.). Tanik is tied for the team lead with 14 wins, going 11-0 in conference play while riding a 12-match winning streak. The doubles team of Womeodu and Garcia earned second team All-SAC doubles honors, posting an 11-1 record at number two doubles and 9-2 mark against SAC opponents. Womeodu has 14 singles wins, going 12-3 at number three singles while posting a 9-2 mark against the league. She has won five straight and eight of her last 10.

Senior Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) is a perfect 13-0 against NCAA Division II opposition, including a 10-0 mark against conference opponents. Garcia is 14-3 on the year, going 10-1 against the SAC. Sophomore Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) has picked up seven wins at number one singles, including five in conference play. Holland has eight victories at number two singles for the Bulldogs.
