Box ScoreBrevard, N.C.----The top-seeded and 49th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs cruised to a 5-0 victory over number five seed Anderson University Friday afternoon in the semifinal round of the 2015 South Atlantic Conference women's tennis tournament. The Bulldogs win their 13th straight match, improving to 15-4 overall to advance to Saturday's championship match.
"The team played really well," head coach
Michael Cabana says. "We got off to a quick start in doubles and kept that momentum rolling into singles play."
The Bulldogs swept through doubles play Friday afternoon. The All-SAC freshman duo of
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) got things started with an 8-1 win at number two doubles. Junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) added an 8-5 win at number three doubles, while a 9-7 victory from sophomore
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) and senior
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) at number one doubles gave the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.
Garcia cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at number six singles to put Wingate on top 4-0. Tanik won the clincher at number four singles. The second team All-SAC selection won the first set 6-0, while prevailing 6-4 in set two to clinch the match for the Bulldogs.
Wingate led in all other singles matches going on at the time the match was clinched. Thomas won her first set 6-2 at number five singles and led 2-1 in set two. Womeodu was also up a set, winning the opener 7-5 while holding a 2-1 lead in the second set. Holland won the first set 6-4 at number two singles, while Ternera led 6-5 in the first set at number one singles.
The Bulldogs will play in the SAC title match Saturday at 12 p.m. Wingate is looking for its fourth tournament title in five years. The 'Dogs won in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Wingate will face the winner of the Queens vs. Tusculum match. The Bulldogs defeated both teams 5-4 during the regular season.
