Hickory, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs guaranteed at least a share of their fifth consecutive regular season SAC title Monday afternoon, prevailing 8-1 at Lenoir-Rhyne University in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. The Bulldogs win their 10th straight, improving to 12-4 overall and 10-0 in the SAC, notching their 36th straight conference win. LRU falls to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the SAC.
Freshmen
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) picked up an 8-2 win at number two doubles for the Bulldogs. Junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) teamed with sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) for a convincing 8-1 win at number three doubles to give Wingate a 2-1 advantage heading to singles play.
Sophomore
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) won 6-4, 7-5 at number one singles, while Holland won 6-4, 6-0 at number two singles. Womeodu prevailed 7-5, 6-3 at three singles, while Tanik won 6-4, 6-2 at number four singles. Senior
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number five singles, while Garcia won 8-1 at six singles.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Coker for a 2 p.m. start. A victory would clinch an outright regular season SAC title for the Bulldogs. A win would also cap an undefeated regular season for Wingate, which would be its third straight and fourth in the last five years.Â
