#7 Queens downs Wingate 91-75

Charlotte, N.C.----The seventh-ranked Queens University Royals shot 54 percent from the field Wednesday night en route to a 91-75 victory over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Royals improve to 21-2 overall and 15-2 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 16-7 overall and 12-5 in the conference.

Sean Morgan had 24 points and seven rebounds to lead the Queens attack, going eight-for-eight from the field. Rob Lewis added 19 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Daniel Camps had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Todd Withers contributed 12 points and five boards, while Marquis Ranked added 11 points for the Royals.

Freshman Mike Baez (Huntersville, N.C.) had 22 points to lead the Wingate attack, adding five rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) added 13 points, while sophomore Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) contributed nine points. Senior Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) had seven points and four assists, while sophomore Kerigan Farley (Hickory, N.C.) also had seven points. Sophomore center Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) pulled down 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

A McCall layup gave the 'Dogs an early 7-2 lead in the opening half. Queens scored the next 11 points, taking a 13-7 lead on a Morgan layup at the 13:58 mark. Buckets from Lewis and Morgan extended the Queens lead to 10 at 22-12 with 11:27 remaining in the half. Baez knocked down three straight triples in a 9-0 run that got Wingate within a point at the 5:55 mark. The Royals closed the half on a 14-3 run, with a Kendall Jones three at the buzzer giving Queens a 43-31 halftime advantage.

A three-point play from Camps pushed the lead to 17 early in the second half, but a Doyle three got Wingate back within 14. A McCall layup with 13:36 to go made it 57-45, but buckets from Morgan and Lewis pushed the Queens lead back to 18.

Layups from Morgan and Withers, along with two free throws from Withers put the Royals on top by 23 at the 9:30 mark. A Griffin three got the 'Dogs within 17, while a McCall dunk made it 79-65 with 4:53 to go. Lolar knocked down a three at the 3:59 mark to get Wingate within 12 points. The Bulldogs would get no closer the rest of the way.

Queens entered the game ranked fourth nationally in field goal percentage and shot 54 percent Wednesday, hitting eight-of-16 shots from three-point range (50 percent). The Bulldogs shot 41 percent from the field, hitting 10-of-30 from beyond the arc (33.3 percent). The Royals held a 43-32 rebounding advantage, holding a 44-28 advantage in points in the paint. Wingate held an 18-11 edge in second-chance points on the night.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Brevard at 4 p.m.
