th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs remained perfect in league play Thursday afternoon, defeating visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University 8-1 in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. The Bulldogs win their 44th consecutive conference match, improving to 10-5 overall and 7-0 in the SAC. The Bears fall to 6-12 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
Wingate went 2-1 in doubles play Thursday afternoon. Freshman
Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and sophomore
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) cruised to an 8-1 win at two doubles, while junior
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) teamed with freshman
Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) for an 8-0 win at number three doubles.
De Andreis won 6-4, 6-3 at number one singles, while junior
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 victory at two singles. Sophomore
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) also rallied at three singles, prevailing 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Senior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) bounced back from a set one loss, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 at four singles. Tanik and Homan won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores at five and six singles.
The Bulldogs are back in action next Wednesday, hosting Anderson at 2 p.m.
