SAC CHAMPS! ‘Dogs cap third straight undefeated SAC season with win over Wolves

Wingate, N.C.----For the third consecutive season and fifth time in the last six years, the Wingate University Bulldogs have gone undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference regular season. Wingate defeated Newberry 6-3 in SAC women's tennis action Saturday, pushing their league winning streak 48 while capturing the regular season SAC title for the sixth straight year. The Bulldogs have now won 59 of their last 60 conference contests. Wingate improves to 14-5 overall and 11-0 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the conference.

"We had a lot of adversity this season, but we really came together as a team," head coach Michael Cabana says. "For us to go undefeated in SAC play is huge and again I'm so proud of the team and what they've accomplished. We found ways to win as a team and every conference win was a team win. People picked each other up and that's how we won it. We won it as a team."

Wingate went 2-1 in doubles play, getting an 8-1 victory at number two doubles from freshman Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and sophomore Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela). The duo is now 8-1 at number two doubles on the year. Junior Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) teamed with freshman Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) for an 8-2 victory at three doubles, moving them to 7-1 on the season.

Homan cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at number six singles, pushing her to 9-2 against the SAC in her freshman season. Tanik prevailed 6-2, 6-2 at five singles, notching a perfect 11-0 record against the SAC this year. The junior is now 32-1 in singles play against the SAC in her career. Tanik's victory gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.

De Andreis won the clincher at one singles, notching a 6-4, 6-3 victory. She went 8-3 at one singles against conference opponents in her freshman season. Junior Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) added a 7-6, 6-2 win at number two singles for the Bulldogs.

Wingate is back in action Monday, April 18, traveling to Limestone for a 2 p.m. match. The Bulldogs will be the number one seed in the SAC Tournament, which begins April 21 at Brevard. Wingate is the defending SAC Tournament champion. The 'Dogs have won four of the last five SAC Tourney titles.
