#46 Wingate pushes SAC winning streak to 49 with sweep over Mars Hill

Wingate, N.C.----The 46th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs opened the 2017 season with a convincing 9-0 victory over visiting Mars Hill University Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. Wingate wins its 49th straight SAC match to start the season 1-0, while the Lions fall to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Sophomores Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) prevailed 8-3 at number one doubles, while juniors Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) and Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) won 8-2 at number two doubles. Seniors Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) and Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) added an 8-2 victory at three doubles to give Wingate a 3-0 advantage heading to singles play.

De Andreis notched her second win of the day by prevailing 6-3, 6-4 at number one singles. Ternera went to 2-0 on the day with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at two singles. Freshman Elena Pellegrini (Livorno, Italy) won 6-3, 6-3 at three singles, while Homan registered a 7-5, 6-0 victory at four singles. Tanik rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win at five singles, while Womeodu cruised to an 8-0 victory at six singles.

The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday, hosting Johnson C. Smith at 1 p.m.
