Salisbury, N.C.----The 45th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs won their 50th straight SAC match Thursday afternoon, rolling to a 9-0 victory at Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. Wingate improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 8-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Bulldogs cruised through doubles play, dropping just two games in the three matches. Sophomores
Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and
Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) won 8-1 at number one doubles, with juniors
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) winning by the same score at two doubles. Seniors
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) and
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) prevailed 8-0 at three doubles to give the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.
De Andreis won 6-2, 7-6 at number one singles, while Ternera prevailed 6-0, 6-3 at two singles. Freshman
Elena Pellegrini (Livorno, Italy) rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number three singles, while Homan won 6-1, 6-2 at four singles. Womeodu prevailed 8-1 at five singles, while Tanik won 8-2 at six singles.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial for an 11 a.m. start.
