#33 Wingate remains perfect in SAC play with 5-4 win over #50 Queens

The 33rd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs are now one of two unbeaten teams in SAC play after handing No. 50 Queens its first league loss of the season Wednesday afternoon, prevailing 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. Wingate improves to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the SAC pushing its SAC winning streak to 54 matches. The Royals fall to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.

The Bulldogs won two of the three doubles matches Wednesday, starting with an 8-6 win at number one doubles from juniors Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela). Wingate's number two doubles team of senior Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) added an 8-5 victory to give Wingate a 2-1 lead heading to singles play.

Queens tied the match with a win at number two singles, but Homan answered with a 6-1, 7-6 victory at number six singles. Senior Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) put the 'Dogs on top 4-2 with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win at number five singles. Queens picked up victories at two and four singles to tie the match 4-4. Freshman Elena Pellegrini (Livorno, Italy) won the clincher at three singles, prevailing 6-1, 6-3 to keep the Bulldogs perfect in league play.

Wingate is back in action Friday, traveling to Radford for a 3:30 p.m. start.
