Newberry, S.C.----The 33rd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs continued their historic league winning streak Thursday afternoon, prevailing 6-3 at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. Wingate improves to 11-2 overall and 7-0 in league play, picking up its 55th straight regular season SAC victory. Newberry falls to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play. Wingate is one of two teams in the SAC without a league loss this season. The Bulldogs will host the other SAC unbeaten Tusculum next Sunday, April 9.
The Bulldogs went 2-1 in doubles play on Thursday, starting with an 8-5 victory at two doubles from senior
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore
Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.). Senior
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) teamed with sophomore
Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) for an 8-6 victory at three doubles, giving Wingate a 2-1 advantage heading to singles play.
Freshman
Elena Pellegrini (Livorno, Italy) won 6-2, 6-1 at number three singles to improve to 9-1 on the season, while junior
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) prevailed 6-0, 6-2 at four singles, making her 6-1 in league play. Tanik won 6-3, 6-2 at five singles, moving to a perfect 12-0 on the year, while Homan capped the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at six singles, making her 6-0 in SAC singles action this season.
The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday, hosting Brevard at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
