#33 Wingate’s rally comes up short in 5-4 setback against #31 Georgia College

Wingate, N.C.----The 33rd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs went 4-2 in singles play Wednesday afternoon, but No. 31 Georgia College won all three doubles matches en route to a 5-4 victory in NCAA Division II women's tennis action. The Bobcats improve to 11-7 overall, while Wingate falls to 16-3 on the season.

Georgia College took a 3-0 lead through doubles play, winning 8-5 at one doubles and 8-3 at two doubles. Senior Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) dropped an 8-6 contest at three doubles.

Freshman Elena Pellegrini (Livorno, Italy) won the opening set 6-1 at three singles, while claiming the match when her opponent retired in the second set. Junior Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) rallied for a 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 victory at four singles, while Tanik rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win at number five singles, ending her regular season with an 18-0 record in singles play. Sophomore Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) rallied for a 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 victory at six singles to finish her regular season with a 16-2 mark in singles action.

Next up for the Bulldogs is the 2017 SAC Tournament, which gets underway April 20 in Rock Hill, S.C.
