Wingate, N.C.----The 33rd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs went 4-2 in singles play Sunday afternoon to rally for a 5-4 victory over No. 39 Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. Wingate wins its 59th straight SAC match to improve to 15-2 overall and 11-0 in the SAC, clinching its seventh straight regular season conference title. Tusculum falls to 14-7 overall and 8-2 in league play.
Tusculum picked up wins at one and two doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading to singles play. Senior
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) teamed with sophomore
Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) for an 8-6 victory at three doubles for the Bulldogs.
Junior
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) tied the match 2-2 with a 6-2. 6-1 win at number four singles, but the Pioneers picked up victories at one and two singles to take a 4-2 lead. Tanik won 6-2, 6-0 at number five singles, making it 4-3 while ending her SAC career with an incredible 43-1 record in conference singles play. The senior is 16-0 overall this season.
Freshman
Elena Pellegrini (Livorno, Italy) kept the Bulldogs alive despite dropping the opening set 4-6 at three singles. She won the second set 7-5, while winning 6-1 in the third set to make it 4-4. Sophomore
Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) won the clincher at six singles, prevailing 6-3, 6-3 to secure the undefeated SAC season and the seventh straight title.
The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, hosting Limestone at 3 p.m.
