Box Score 2 Mount Olive, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs bounced back after dropping game one 8-0, prevailing 3-2 in game two of Tuesday afternoon's NCAA Division II softball doubleheader at the University of Mount Olive. Wingate moves to 6-8 overall, while Mount Olive goes to 4-6 on the season.
Game One: Mount Olive 8, Wingate 0 (6 innings)
Heather Childress went four-for-four with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Mount Olive offense in game one. Anna Ingram added three hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while Kristin Power had a hit, RBI and run scored for the Trojans.
Senior outfielder
Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) and freshman
Gracyn Polk (Concord, N.C.) each went one-for-two to lead the Wingate offense, while sophomore infielder
Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) was one-for-three.
Callie Ferrell's RBI single in the first got the Trojans on the board, while a two-run double from Childress in the second made it 3-0.
A bases-loaded walk in the fourth put UMO on top by four, while RBI singles from Power and Kayla Allen in the fifth made it 6-0. Mount Olive ended the game in the sixth, with an Ingram RBI double and Childress RBI single making the final margin 8-0.
Mallory Ratcliff got the win, tossing six shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out seven. Freshman right-hander
Sam Hogan (Albemarle, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-3. She allowed three runs on five hits in two innings, striking out three and walking one.
Game Two: Wingate 3, Mount Olive 2
The Bulldogs struck first in the third, when Sapp doubled to right center, then scored on an RBI single from sophomore pitcher
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.).
Mount Olive tied it in the fourth, but Wingate answered with a run in the top of the fifth. Sophomore outfielder
Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) started things with a single, then scored on an RBI single from sophomore
Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) to make it 2-1.
Reep drew a leadoff walk in the seventh, then moved to second on Swenson's single and scored on an RBI double from Floyd to put the 'Dogs on to 3-1.
The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Reep was able to finish things off to pick up the win, moving to 4-3 on the season.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, hosting a doubleheader against UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m.
