Wingate finishes second at City of Florence Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Florence, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened the final day of the City of Florence Invitational with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Francis Marion University Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division II men's tennis action, advancing to the championship match. The Bulldogs dropped a tough 5-3 decision against ninth-ranked Lander in the title match, finishing second overall.

Wingate 5, Francis Marion 0 (Box Score)

The Bulldogs picked up their second sweep over a Peach Belt team in as many days Saturday after Friday's 5-0 victory against Augusta, blanking the Patriots 5-0. Francis Marion entered the weekend ranked eighth in the region, one spot ahead of ninth-ranked Wingate. The 'Dogs moved to 2-0 with the win, while the Patriots fell to 1-2.

The nation's 11th-ranked doubles team of Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.) and Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) won 8-2 at one doubles, while junior Duncan Addison (Halifax, Canada) teamed with freshman Joseph Canyadell (Lleida, Spain) for an 8-5 victory at two doubles. Freshman Matthew Jones (Shrewsbury, United Kingdom) and Enrico Giacomini (Vicenza, Italy) put the 'Dogs on top 3-0 with an 8-6 win at three doubles.

Belsito, ranked 31st in the nation, rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win at number one singles. Canyadell put Wingate into the championship match with a 7-6, 6-2 victory at number two singles. Jones and DuToit were in a third set at three and four singles, along with Tamir Geva (Jerusalem, Israel) at six singles.

#9 Lander 5, Wingate 3 (Box Score)

The ninth-ranked Bearcats, ranked second in the region, moved to 4-0 on the year and captured the City of Florence Invitational title by rallying for a 5-3 victory over Wingate, who fell to 2-1 overall.

Belsito and DuToit moved to 3-0 at number one doubles on the year with a 9-7 victory, while Canyadell and Addison prevailed 8-5 at number two doubles. Jones and Giacomini dropped a tight 9-7 decision at three doubles for the Bulldogs, who took a 2-1 lead into singles play.

Belsito cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory at number one singles, but the Bearcats won in straight sets at two and three singles. After dropping a tough 7-6 opening set at four singles, DuToit won the second set 7-5 before falling 6-2 in the third set. Giacomini had a lead in the third set when play was stopped, with Lander adding a victory at six singles.

The Bulldogs are back in action Thursday, traveling to Johnson C. Smith for a 2:30 p.m. match, followed by Saturday's trip to USC Aiken.
