Box Score 2 Florence, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up a pair of impressive victories Saturday afternoon, taking home the title at the City of Florence Invitational in NCAA Division II women's tennis action. The Bulldogs prevailed 6-0 over Lander to advance to the title match, while rolling to a 5-1 victory over 20th-ranked Francis Marion to claim the championship, moving to 3-0 on the season.
"We had a great weekend and played very well," head coach
Michael Cabana says. "The girls faced some adversity and were able to overcome it this weekend. We will take what we learned this weekend, use it to get better and continue to move forward as a team."

The Bulldogs got an 8-6 win at one doubles from sophomore
Michela Verpelli (Milan, Italy) and freshman
Meredith Lee (Pottstown, Pa.), while junior
Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and
Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) won by the same score at two doubles. Senior
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) teamed with freshman
Chyi Lee (Wenshan District Taipei, Taiwan) prevailed 8-4 at three doubles to give Wingate a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.
De Andreis cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at number two singles, while Chyi Lee won 6-3, 6-3 at three singles. Sophomore
Marisa Ostoja (Split, Croatia) added a 6-4, 6-0 win at five singles. When the 'Dogs clinched the match, Verpelli led 6-2, 5-3 at one singles, while Womeodu was ahead 6-3, 5-1 at four singles and Homan held a 6-3, 5-0 advantage at number six singles.
Wingate 5, #20 Francis Marion 1 (Box Score)
Homan and De Andreis won a tight 9-8 match at number two doubles in the championship match, while an 8-4 victory at three doubles from Womeodu and Chyi Lee put the 'Dogs on top 2-1 heading to singles play. Verpelli and Meredith Lee fell 9-8 to an FMU doubles team ranked 13th nationally.
De Andreis picked up her fourth win of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at two singles, while Womeodu prevailed 6-1, 6-3 at number four singles. Homan added a 6-4, 6-0 win at six singles for the Bulldogs. Verpelli led 6-3, 5-3 at one singles when Wingate clinched the title, with Chyi Lee leading 3-2 in set two after taking the first set at three singles. Ostoja was about to send the match at five singles to a third set.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Johnson C. Smith for a 2:30 p.m. match. The Bulldogs travel to USC Aiken Saturday afternoon.
