Box Score Salisbury, N.C.----The 20th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs picked up their second consecutive conference sweep Thursday afternoon, cruising to a 9-0 victory at Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. The Bulldogs improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles play, starting with an 8-3 victory at one doubles from sophomore
Michela Verpelli (Milan, Italy) and freshman
Meredith Lee (Pottstown, Pa.). Juniors
Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and
Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) won 8-6 at two doubles, while an 8-4 victory at three doubles from senior
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and freshman
Chyi Lee (Wenshan District Taipei, Taiwan) made it 3-0 heading to singles play.
Verpelli won 6-2, 6-2 at number one singles, while De Andreis prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at two singles. Chyi Lee picked up a 6-2 ,6-7, 6-2 victory at number three singles, while sophomore
Marisa Ostoja (Split, Croatia) notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at four singles. Homan and Meredith Lee capped the day with 8-0 victories at five and six singles for the Bulldogs.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Carson-Newman for an 11 a.m. start.
