#5 Georgia College eliminates Wingate from NCAA Tournament

Box Score Tigerville, S.C.----The fifth-ranked Georgia College Bobcats scored 11 unanswered runs Friday afternoon, erasing an early deficit en route to a 13-3 victory over Wingate University on day two of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional baseball tournament. The Bobcats improve to 43-11 overall, staying alive in the NCAA Tournament. Wingate is eliminated from the tournament, ending its season at 34-19 overall.

Wesley Wommack had a double, homer and six RBI to lead the Georgia College offense. Brandt Stallings added a homer and three runs scored, while Nate Schmal, Matthew Miller and Brandon Purcell each added a hit, RBI and run scored for the Bobcats.

Sophomore infielder McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Senior outfielder Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) went three-for-five with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman Jed Bryant (Lexington, N.C.) added two hits including a double, scoring a run. Senior outfielder Trent Wynn (New Bern, N.C.) also had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.

A Wingate error helped Georgia College score a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs answered with three runs in the third. Bryant started it with a one-out double, then scored on an RBI single from Andrus. Mellett put the 'Dogs on top when he connected on his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot to right to make it 3-2.

Georgia College answered in the fifth, taking a 5-3 lead on Wommack's three-run homer. Stallings added a solo shot in the sixth to give the Bobcats a three-run advantage.

A Purcell RBI triple and Logan Mattix RBI single in the seventh made it 8-3. Wommack pushed the lead to eight in the eighth with a three-run double. RBI singles from Schmal and Miller in the ninth made the final margin 13-3.

Bradley Cammack got the win in relief, tossing 5 1/3 shutout innings, striking out four and walking two while allowing five hits to improve to 13-2 on the year. Junior right-hander Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) took the loss, falling to 5-4. He allowed seven earned runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out one and walking three.
