Three pool records fall as Wingate sweeps C-N in two top-11 NCAA battles

Wingate, N.C.----In two battles between four squads ranked in the CSCAA NCAA Division II top 11, the Wingate University swimming teams broke three pool records on the way to a Bluegrass Mountain Conference sweep over Carson-Newman University at the WU Natatorium Saturday.
 
The number two Wingate women earned a 248-67 decision over the number seven C-N Eagles. The number six Bulldog men collected a 240-75 victory over no. 11 Carson-Newman. Freshmen Miguel Marcos (men's 1000 Freestyle) and Kelsea Munro (women's 50 Freestyle) broke individual pool records, while the men's 400 Medley Relay quartet set a new pool standard as well.

Men's notes
 
- Marcos' 1000 Freestyle time of 9:26.05 bested the old record by 0.31 seconds
- Queens University of Charlotte's Dutch Olympian Dion Dressens set the old record (9:26.36) in 2016
- On Saturday, Marcos won three individual Freestyle events: the 200, 500 and 1000
- Marcos' gold-medal times: 200 (1:42.00), 500 (4:32.99) and 1000 (9:26.05)
- Sophomore Bozo Puhalovic swam the anchor leg on the pool record-setting 400 Medley Relay quartet (3:25.74)
- He was joined (in order) by Daniel Brisuda, Fedor Sokolov and Slava Ohnov
- The previous pool record was eight years old, held by UNC Wilmington (3:26.79)
- Puhalovic had his hand in five victories Saturday (one individual, four relay)
- He won the 50 Freestyle (20.98) and also helped WU touch first in the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays and the 200 Medley Relay
- Ohnov swam on three of the four winning relays (both Freestyle races and the 400 Medley Relay)
- Sophomore Yann Van Den Bossche won two individual events
- Van Den Bossche touched first in the 200 Backstroke (1:54.84) and the 200 Breaststroke (2:09.50)
- Sokolov, Bennett Broad and Kalle Svensson collected two relay victories each
- Individually, Sokolov won the 100 Breaststroke (57.47), while Svensson won the 100 Butterfly (51.09)
- Wingate won 14-of-17 contested events Saturday
 
Women's notes
 
- Kelsea Munro made the most of her first home appearance, earning a team-best six triumphs
- She won the 50 Freestyle with a new pool-record time of 23.57
- The previous record was 23.74, established by Danielle Melilli (Queens) in 2020
- Earlier in the day, Munro touched first in the 100 Freestyle (51.84)
- Munro swam on four-of-four gold medal relay squads (200 and 400 Free, 200 and 400 Medley)
- Munro was one of four Bulldogs to win two individual events each
- Senior Kate Agger won the 500 (5:10.82) and the 1000 Freestyle (10:35.28)
- Senior Anna Miram won the 100 (58.51) and the 200 Backstroke (2:06.59)
- Junior Lily Sanocki won the 200 Breaststroke (2:21.53) and the 400 Individual Medley (4:38.39)
- Sophomore Berkley Smith collected three relay wins, skipping the 400 Medley Relay
- Lucie Andrews, Martina Hana Kubalova, Anne-Sofie Nissen and Amanda Wenhold swam on two victorious relay teams each
- Individually, Kubalova won the 100 Butterfly (58.38)
- Wenhold touched first in the 200 Freestyle (1:56.34)
- Wingate won 16-of-17 contested events Saturday
 
Next on the agenda
 
Wingate travels to Atlanta Nov. 5-6 for the Emory University Invitational. The event will feature a star-studded, multi-divisional field.
