Greensboro, N.C.----The Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams begin the
2022 NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center Wednesday. The four-day event runs through Saturday. Preliminaries begin each morning at 10 a.m. Finals start each evening at 6 p.m.
Looking back at the 2021 NCAA Division II championships
Last season, the Wingate women finished sixth and the men placed seventh at the NCAA national championship meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Eighteen WU student-athletes qualified for the championships.
Six Bulldog All-Americans from the 2021 national championship meet will compete in Greensboro: women's team members
Kate Agger,
Anna Miram and
Anne-Sofie Nissen and men's team members
Slava Ohnov,
Marcel Snitko and
Jonas Soerensen.
Nissen and Ohnov had five first team All-American swims each last year. Agger, Miram and Snitko weighed in with four each. Agger and Soerensen had similar NCAA resumes, as both student-athletes made first team All-American in the three distance events (500, 1000 and 1650 Freestyle races).
Looking back at the 2022 Bluegrass Mountain Conference meet
Both Wingate teams finished second in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference meet in Charlotte. Soerensen defended his BMC 1650 Freestyle title on the meet's final night. Snitko won the men's 200 Freestyle, while newcomers
Fedor Sokolov and
Miguel Marcos won the men's 100 Breaststroke and the men's 1000 Freestyle, respectively.
Wingate's 20 NCAA qualifiers combined for 67 All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference swims. Ohnov led the way with seven All-BMC medals (four relays, three individual). Snitko was next with six All-BMC swims. Marcos and
Bozo Puhalovic had five each.
On the women's side, newcomer
Kelsea Munro had six All-BMC swims (three relays, three individual). Agger was five-for-five, as she collected five BMC medals in five events (four Freestyle individual races plus the 800 Freestyle relay).
